1 week here was way too long and we were itching to go home after 3 days. There is no coffee tea or drink station in the buffet which would have been better than waiting for a waiter to serve you each time. They don’t offer coffee or tea after lunch or dinner. The service is rushed - they bring out all your courses before you’re finished the last. Restaurants are over booked and most are first come first serve. The cleaners use old smelly rags which you can smell on the counters and furniture and on the phone. The hotel bedding has a stale smell like when your clothes don’t dry properly, they smelt like pee. Entertainment is outdated with tributes to Bon Jovi and Queen and the times were off from what they were displaying so we missed some shows like the magic show. ![]() The hotel is very big but there is not much to do inside just a reception area. They played Indian music! We expected a mariachi band or something to that effect, despite the cliches. Mexican night at the buffet was equally disappointing. No authentic flavours, music or even a jalepeno or avocado in sight. The Mexican restaurant lacks the feel you are looking for. Chicken was limited in supply so get to the restaurant early. They boil most of their meat and they don’t add much spice at all. On this note, if you are looking for authentic Mexican food - this hotel does not have even the basics you would expect such as hard shell tacos, wraps, usual fixings, enchiladas, flautas, chimichanga, or sizzling fajita, or hot sauce etc. Hotel is definitely more geared toward adults with its fancy menus. Restaurants have no printed menus and you have to scan for menus which was annoying. Room service food was bland and took too long. There is a kids splash pad and a limited kids menu, but decent wood burning pizza place but it’s only open for lunch. If you have kids, there is not much to do here. You will spend your entire vacation in a pool. None of the rooms are actually facing the beach, only the prestige rooms do, which you have to pay $200 extra per night, but considering the smell - I’d rather not. We expected turquoise blue water like the pictures but got muddy smelly seaweed water. It takes 5 minutes to drive out, and even if you do there is nothing to do as it’s located off a highway. You cannot walk out of the resort onto the street or into town hoping for a market or food truck. It’s promoted as being near the hotel zone but is actually 25 minutes from Cancun hotel zone and is located on the Riviera Maya. This hotel is rated 4-5 stars but the beach brings it to a 2-3. Hate to be negative but if you are looking to go Mexico for a good beach, head for the Cancun hotel zone instead of the Azul hotel.
